Lessons to be learned? First, if you are listing items to sell at a garage sale or on craigslist, price it right! I'd never consider paying $75 for a used patio chair that I'm going to have to repaint, and most people looking on craigslist are looking for deals just like I am. If you truly want to sell it, price it accordingly. Buyers, if you see something overpriced, but you're really interested (and you haven't found a better price online) then haggle!
Next, sometimes you can shop around and find a better deal on something new, so don't assume you're gong to get the biggest bang for your buck on craigslist. I saw this set from Wal-mart on sale last season for about $275. I've seen people asking more for a used set! Plus, if you purchase through a site like ebates or Shop at Home you can get cash back that will quickly add up for those larger purchases.
Does that mean you won't get a Frugalista Find on craigslist or at a garage sale? Of course not, but if you're making a larger purchase (furniture, bicycle, etc.) it pays to do a little research first.
